M. Nasir Abas is an Indonesian public figure, counter-terrorism and deradicalization practitioner, author, and former member of Negara Islam Indonesia (NII) and Jamaah Islamiyah (JI). Since disengaging from extremist networks in 2003, he has dedicated his work to peacebuilding, countering violent extremism, deradicalization, and social reintegration.
Since 2003, Nasir Abas has worked closely with Indonesia’s Detachment 88 Anti-Terror Police and the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT), as well as other government institutions, serving as a subject-matter expert, advisor, lecturer, and resource person in counter-terrorism, deradicalization, and reintegration initiatives. He has also contributed to public education and dialogue through lectures, seminars, media engagements, and written works on terrorism prevention and peacebuilding.
With his experience and practitioner perspective, Nasir Abas is actively involved in research and academic initiatives, including applied social psychology and counter-radicalization research at Dynamics of Applied Social Psychology Research (DASPR). His work brings together practical field experience and research to support evidence-informed approaches to preventing violent extremism and strengthening social resilience.
Nasir Abas is also the founder of Forum Komunikasi Aktivis Akhlakulkarimah Indonesia (FKAAI), a social and charitable organization that focuses on social reintegration, moral development, community resilience, and peacebuilding among communities affected by terrorism.
He is currently exploring opportunities to extend community-based peacebuilding, deradicalization, and social reintegration initiatives to Malaysia through collaboration with academic institutions, civil society organizations, and other relevant partners.
